Introduction
To be responsible for and provide clear leadership in the delivery of professional and effective medical assistance and/or WorkHealth services for clients of Intl. SOS to the highest standards of excellence in conjunction with the Medical Directors, Medical Assistance Doctor and Nurses.

Duties & Responsibilities
MEDICAL ASSISTANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

To participate in the Assistance Medical Doctor roster as required by Intl SOS
Responsibility for medical due diligence and case direction with respect to all medical assistance cases.
Responsibility for all ongoing medical related tasks required on all medical assistance cases.
Assess each case with respect to its medical elements and provide direction in order to facilitate medical due diligence and render the appropriate assistance.
Provision of assistance with referrals and retrospective claims assessments as required.
Responsibility for ensuring that there is an appropriate medical handover of cases at the beginning/end of each shift.
Provide clear case direction at the transmission handover process in the assistance centre each day.
Direct the medical frequency /intensity of medical contacts with treating doctors, clients, patients and their family members as appropriate.

 

 
Direct the planning and progress of medical hospitalisation cases.
Oversee the planning and progress of operational issues relating to medical case management.


MEDICAL ASSISTANCE SERVICES

Receive and assess all medically related calls received from clients. Collect logistical, medical and collateral histories pertaining to the medical event/incident.
Provide telephone medical assessment of patients in all parts of the world, assess and monitor the appropriateness of the treatment where they are located.
Give advice to callers, relatives, employers, employees, insurance companies and other clients.
Organise and supervise appropriate medical assistance for Intl.SOS clients. This includes obtaining medical reports, organising referrals, monitoring the patient’s conditions, recommending appropriate means of medical transportation, and monitoring the progress of such.
Obtain medical reports from treating doctors to ascertain the suitability of patient’s treatment, monitor medical care and co-ordinate the patient’s needs for transport as appropriate.
Providing medical referrals in the regions covered / serviced by the Assistance Centers.
Conduct intermittent site surveys (review of medical facilities) to add to our network of medical providers as appropriate.
Partake in the further development and enhancement of Intl.SOS medical and logistic capabilities.


MEDICAL LIAISON AND REPORTING

Collect relevant medical information to produce focused professional medical reports.
Professionally communicate verbally and/or in writing to the relevant parties/clients on the progress of the patient’s condition and provision of appropriate recommendations.
Undertake responsibility for all medical information released from the Assistance centre.
Undertake direct contact with relevant Treating Medical Officers and Local Medical Officers as appropriate to expedite the case management.
Liaise with client medical departments and claim departments to effectively communicate relevant medical and logistical information in accordance with the client requirements.
Undertake public relations calls as required to ensure good communication with all parties and to promote clear understanding with patients, families, clients etc.
Establish responsive liaison arrangements both within Intl. SOS and externally. I.e. Medical Directors, patients and insurance companies.
Positively promote the work of Intl. SOS.
Maintain high standards of detailed and accurate documentation including the consistent updating of case files.


WORKHEALTH SERVICES AS A FUNTION OF RESPONSE CENTRE RESPONSIBILITIES

To be provided in alignment with abovementioned responsibilities to ensure integrity of service to Intl. SOS clients.
Provide WorkHealth Services as required to Intl. SOS clients in keeping with relevant medical protocols, IADC / OSHA principles and client specific guidelines / protocols for Response Center subscribed clients.
Provide medical advice/direction to onsite responsible medical officers for non-emergency cases within the framework of workplace injury and illness case management.
Ensure that all cases are managed with an understanding of occupational health and safety concepts including lost time injuries, days off work, restricted work duties, reporting and record ability as well as classification for first aid and medical treatment cases.
Direct non-medical personnel at a remote location (e.g. a commercial maritime ship captain) on how to deliver the appropriate medical care to a patient.
Understand the role of Maritime Rescue Coordination Centres (MRCC) in commercial maritime cases, and how to provide medical information to the MRCC when required.
Provide medical assessments of patients at client sites in all parts of the world using telephone or telemedicine systems as available to assess and monitor the patient.
Safely maximize the use of nonprescription drugs and first aid treatment when medical treatment intervention is unnecessary.
Escalation of all cases to the Medical Director and Senior Medical Advisor Response Centre as per the relevant internal escalation criteria and guidelines in regards to the provision of WorkHealth Services.
Ensure appropriate reporting of cases within the set OSHA and IADC guidelines as specified and required by the relevant clients in their contracts and as directed by the Senior Medical Advisor Response Centre.
Collect medical and case information for the client as necessary to support their occupational health injury/illness recording process.
Recommend out-patient or in-patient medical care within the framework of injury and illness case management methodology, with specific reference to the client’s industry and the patient’s fitness to return to work.
Review medical information from a patient’s treating doctor to aid treatment and assess fitness to return to work.
Provide health information to the client to determine the timing of the patient returning to work, including reference to any limitations/restriction of work duties.
Interaction as per agreed protocols with the medical assistance platform in the Johannesburg Assistance Centre and other Intl.SOS Assistance Centres to ensure continued medical care and full medical oversight of all cases.
Directly responsible for the medical aspects of the decision to transport a patient off-site (or disembark the patient from a maritime vessel) including assessment of the necessity and the patient risks associated with the mode of transport plus the distance from the medical facility.
Liaise with Assistance Centre medical teams to support their coordination of medical transport as necessary.


MEDICAL TRANSPORTATION

Consistently maintain the Intl.SOS Medical Transportation Standards (MTS) in expediting all medical transportations.
Responsibility for the assessment of medical and logistical aspects of evacuations and repatriations, including the assessment of the necessity of an evacuation and the means by which it should take place. I.e. air-ambulance / commercial carrier / seated / stretcher / escort type / medical equipment etc where required.
Liaise with medical departments of various airlines for passenger medical clearance as indicated.
Act as a medical escort when required for appropriate medical cases.


GLOBAL ASSISTANCE NETWORK (GAN) AND REFERRALS

Responsibility for medical referrals such that patients are referred to appropriate levels of care and the appropriate medical provider is selected.
Collation of new information on medical providers and facilities encountered and transfer of this information to the Global Assistance Network (GAN) department with medical comment for further investigation.


MEDICAL SERVICES

Assist in the review and implementation of Medical Evacuation Response Procedures (MERP) for Intl.SOS Medical Services sites and clients operating in the region.
Undertake work at other locations, including Medical Services sites, as and when required by consensus arrangement


CASE ESCALATION

Escalation as per Intl.SOS protocol to the:
Medical Director of the Assistance centre,
Senior Medical Advisor Response Centre,
Regional Medical Director,
Regional Occupational Health Medical Director,
Corporate Assistance Department (CAD), and/or
Occupational Health Specialist Group


PROMOTION OF INTL.SOS SERVICES

Participate, under the direction of the Medical Director and General Manager and in consultation with the Marketing Manager, in appropriate business development activities to enhance the development of Intl.SOS activities.
Assist in explaining Intl.SOS’ medical services to prospective and existing clients as requested.


OTHER

Work within and promote all Intl. SOS policies and procedures.
Carry out other reasonable duties as requested by the Medical Director.
Work flexible hours as appropriate to the needs of the post.
Be responsible for own CME. Intl.SOS will endeavor to support appropriate CME requests
Take a leading role in case management and team development, working closely with the Operations manager and Shift Supervisors.
Attend supervision, training and departmental meetings as and when required.
Undertake accountability for your workload and movements to your line manager

Desired Experience & Qualification
Required Skills and Knowledge:

Demonstrates accountability, confidentiality and ability to handle client related funding
Able to work under pressure and deliver results to deadlines
Be independent and firm, at same time a team player
Good interpersonal skills to work in the team – with service-focus mentality
Understanding of the Jones Act
Knowledge / experience within the commercial maritime industry (preferred)
Well traveled with Africa knowledge and a global geographical awareness


Required Qualification:

MBChB
HPCSA Registration
Post graduate qualification and/or experience in Occupational Health, Emergency Medicine, Travel/Tropical Medicine, Family Medicine
ATLS, BLS and ACLS Required


Required Experience:

Min 5 years post graduate experience preferred as per Group Standard
Min 5 year private sector working experience in Emergency Department and or suitable General/Family Practice
